Mixed media artwork in traditional and digital forms.
Hello, and welcome to my world!
I’m Kate Mason and I live in Portsmouth, UK. Originally trained in fine art, I went on to complete a degree in Three Dimensional Design focusing on wire sculpture and have also dabbled in ceramics. These days I am a countryside ranger and artist, and find that the two roles inspire me daily, creating the peaceful balance that I need in my life.
I work in inks, watercolours and gouache, usually starting with traditional media before scanning and adding finishing touches and adjustments in Procreate and Affinity on the iPad. In this way I can enjoy the energy, flow and bleed effects of natural materials, but also have the ability to adjust colours, light effects and digital layering. I find it gives me more freedom to play at the finishing stage of a painting.

Finding beauty in nature.
It’s easy for me to find inspiration in the beautiful British countryside where I work as a ranger, especially given the wide range of habitats and projects I am involved with. In my daily life I work with a variety of habitats from lakes and ponds to chalk hills and managed forests. I encounter butterflies, moths, bees, birds, bats, reptiles and amphibians.
As the custodian of a Country Park full of beautifully-planted beds, a Plant Heritage National Collection of plants and many beautiful tree specimens, I am privileged to be inspired by everything I see and do daily. I bring this inspiration in to my artwork.
